Listen to Laura talk about her work.
A sense of place is central to my practice as an artist. I have lived, worked and travelled between Zimbabwe, England and Australia. All of these experiences are layers of enrichment for my creative process. Born in Zimbabwe, a place poor in material wealth but rich in culture and nature. Creativity thrives there and the passion to create drives artists to make something out of almost anything. It is this innovation and resilience that drove me to pursue my career as an artist. I worked in Galleries while I studied an Honours Degree in Fine Art in Surrey and then post graduate Visual Art teaching in London. Sharing my passion for creativity as an artist educator is a privilege.
Living in the Royal National Park profoundly shapes my creative process, offering me the rare gift of immersion. It’s here that I observe, reflect, and collect—an ever-curious keeper of nostalgic moments. Walking, photographing, swimming, sketching are all part of my process. Visceral cues to anchor my ideas. What I truly seek to create comes from within—a deeper expression that transcends the seen and touches the imagined. This is how I paint and create, guided by spontaneity and instinct.
For me, colour is not merely visual; it’s an interaction, an energy that resonates on an emotional level. A piece of art, in its truest form, can evoke a journey—transporting the viewer to "that memory of place," where reality and imagination intertwine.
I work without a fixed "style," allowing my practice to flow with what I feel and where the energy takes me. My work often blends realism and abstraction, drawing on a diverse palette of materials. Acrylics, watercolours, pastels, oil sticks, and natural pigments feature prominently, each chosen to convey the mood and texture of a piece. I am deeply inspired by the environment, often incorporating mixed media methods to piece fragments of memory and immediacy in one artwork. I experiment with seemingly immiscible materials on various surfaces, including canvas, board, paper and silk, to create tangible expression of the precarious balance of flora and fauna in my surrounds.
My finished works span an array of forms: richly painted canvases, and playful watercolours, Texture, colour, and form are at the heart of each piece, inviting the viewer to explore layers of meaning and personal connections to experience.
What resonates most deeply with me are moments—the peace and beauty of time spent in the natural world. The crashing of waves, the splash of diving in, shifting hues of the landscape from dawn to dusk and the commentary of birds all inform my creative practice. These moments of wonder serve as my muse. For me, art is both a response and a surrender to such beauty, preserving it as a source of inspiration and solace for all time.
